Aga Khan Rural Support Programme (India) is a non-denominational, non-political, non-government development organization established in 1983. Envisioned by His Highness the Aga Khan to uplift the lives of marginalized communities in remote locations, AKRSP(I) works as a catalyst for rural poverty reduction through community empowerment, collectivization, and sustainable management of the environment.
π Geographic Reach & Impact:
- Operating States: Active across 4 states in India: Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Maharashtra.
- Scale of Impact: Reaches over 3,255 villages, impacting more than 3.5 million lives and working with over 700,000 households.
- Target Group: Over 80% of impacted households belong to marginalized sectors (tribals, dalits, minorities), and over 60% of beneficiaries are women.
π± Key Areas of Intervention:
- Agriculture and Climate Resilience: Focuses on income enhancement, natural farming practices, and soil/water conservation. It has provided assured irrigation across 75,000+ hectares of land.
- Renewable Energy: Promotes alternative energy coverage (solar lamps, decentralized systems) and solar-powered irrigation schemes.
- Work and Enterprise: Includes youth skill development initiatives like “Yuva Junction” for vocational training and gainful employment, alongside individual micro-enterprises.
- Drinking Water and Sanitation: Implements roof rainwater harvesting, clean drinking water supply schemes, and sanitation units to build hygiene-conscious, ODF-free communities.
- Education & Governance: Supports early childhood development, learning enrichment programs, and strengthens local rural governance bodies (Panchayats, Gram Sabhas).
